Study

What was researched

Over the years, a lot has happened on social media. It is full of different posts and opinions on a given topic from different people around the world. Since social media users have free will to post whatever they want, there are people who have been experiencing negative comments and effects due to other people judging or “bashing” them.

Social media has become a fundamental part of the lifestyles of teenagers in recent years. From Instagram, Facebook, to TikTok, According to Columbia University Irving Medical Center 12 years old is the average age at which a child opens a social media account. However, research has shown a negative impact of social media on teenagers' mental health, ranging from anxiety to depression. According to the National Library of Medicine (Dr. Sangita Jogdand, and Mayank Kumar, 2022 Oct; 14) several factors are believed to be responsible for this association, including exposure to inexplicit or inappropriate content, cyber bullying, harassment among others. To address this issue, Nearly half (46%) of US teenagers report using the internet "nearly continuously" in 2018, an increase from 24% in 2015. (Monica Anderson, September 27, 2018)

Students that are “Gen Zs” are highly affected from this due to the amount of usage of social media, there also has been a survey from McKinsey health institute from the respondents of 42,000 that they spend time posting and checking social media a day. (By Erica Coe, Andrew Doy, Kana Enomoto, and Cheryl Healy, April 28, 2023.) 95% ages 13 to 17 use social media, with more than 1 in 3 reporting that they use it “almost constantly.” (Annie E. Casey Foundation, August 10, 2023.)
Parents should take action to prevent their child from using too much social media and get their attention more and supervise them from the usage of their devices. “Not only does limiting the amount of time you spend plugged into computers provide a healthy counterpoint to the technology-obsessed world, it also strengthens the parent-child bond and makes children feel more secure. Children need to know that you are available to help them with their problems, talk about their day, or give them a reality check.” (Rachel Ehmke, 2023.)

This research raises awareness and promotes the ever growing problem that is mental health disorders. It supplies adequate solutions that people with mental illness can use to recover and potentially heal. This study also gives people a new perspective about mental health problems that social media creates, allowing them to further understand and empathize with the newer generations. In conclusion this research aims to target the overall well being of the students of grade 10 and to help people gain the key to prevent these kinds of issues, spreading knowledge and having a deeper comprehension that helps them to have a connection within themselves to manage their overall health.
